Having been back to the UK twice this year I must say that the cost of living there now appears to be cheaper than here (Adelaide). The ability to buy Cheap from Aldi, Netto etc does not exist, cars are extortionate and property rental is also expensive. I am making a comparison between here and Leicestershire. We are now considering a move to the tropical north Queensland, near Cairns. Yeah books are ridiculous!!

It is quite amazing, isn't it. And with Aussie inflation going through the roof at the moment, the trend looks set to continue. Having said that, I notice Woolies own-brand bread has got cheaper recently (despite rising fuel and grain prices).

We buy most of our books and DVDs from amazon.co.uk too - we store up a wish list for a few months then place a big order all at once. Amazon must love us!

Yeah - what's with the ridiculous prices of appliances, books and bread round here? AND broadband. Guess that's the price we pay for living in a country with only a third of the UK population, meaning competition is virtually non-existent.
Wish I'd brought my lovely washing machine with me - ended up selling it on UK ebay for 100 GBP. Would've been worth about $800 here! I've been buying books and DVDs from Amazon.co.uk - is still cheaper than buying new ones here. But somebody told me to try and buy them in from Singapore as they're cheaper still.
